Baby dies in Mater Dei car park

One-year-old was left unattended in a car for several hours

Updated 6.40pm

A one-year-old baby was found dead in a car in the Mater Dei car park on Thursday afternoon.

In a statement, the police said they were informed of the incident at around 2pm.

Sources said that the baby boy spent between five to six hours in the car unattended.

Times of Malta is informed that the parents, both Maltese nationals, are well-respected professionals working at Mater Dei Hospital.

Details of the tragic circumstances that led to the death have started to emerge.

Two independent sources said the baby was due to be dropped off at the childcare centre, which is located close to Mater Dei Hospital. When the mother went to collect the child hours later, she was told the baby was not there.

She rushed back to the car at the Mater Dei car park to find that the boy was in the car and unresponsive. The child was given CPR on the scene but was pronounced dead.

The grieving parents have two other children.

The magisterial inquiry is being held by Dr Monica Borg Galea. Police are investigating.
