The Badminton Association has just organised the 2003 edition of its junior championships at St Martin's College, Swatar.
This event has been a regular feature in the calendar for several years as it serves to put the spotlight on the emerging talents within its junior ranks. It also gives each participant a chance to gauge skills against opponents within the same age bracket, while at the same time motivating them to higher achievements.
The overall event is usually distinguished over three different categories: U-13, U-16 and U-19. The U-13 and U-19 championships were held recently, the other will follow at a later stage.
The U-13 Boys' Singles title was won by Samuel Cali. Andre Grech was runner-up. The equivalent female title was taken by Jeanella Grech. Jahel Briffa was second.
Albert Bezzina and Maria Borg won the U-19 titles. Adrian Chetcuti and Fiorella Farrugia were runners-up.
The men's U-19s also featured a doubles competition. Here, the title was claimed by Albert Bezzina/Adrian Chetcuti. They beat Daniel Baldacchino/Avner Vella.
The U-16 championships will be held on March 30 at the same venue.
Meanwhile, the activities of the Badminton Association will continue on Sunday with another two fixtures from the Mixed League.
Shuttles BC play against Pawla Wolves Schtag at the University Sports Complex while Birkirkara Medairco 'A' will face Birkirkara Medairco 'B' at St Martin's, both matches starting at 9.30 a.m.
