Denmark's Peter Gade survived a mid-match lapse to defeat China's Bao Chunlai 21-15 17-21 21-14 in the final to win the men's singles title at the Malaysian Open yesterday.

The veteran world number five threw his racket into the crowd in celebration at the climax of an amazing nine days that started with him being rushed to hospital after he suffered headaches and vomiting on his flight from Europe.

Gade earned $16,000 for his victory. The Malaysian Open is the first leg of a 12-tournament Super Series tour which Badminton World Federation officials hope will boost the sport's appeal.
