The race to the post of University rector has come down to just two academics, Godfrey Baldacchino and Alfred Vella, who were the only candidates to be nominated for the role, the University of Malta confirmed in a statement yesterday.

Nominations closed yesterday, with the election for the next rector expected to take place later this month.

Prof. Baldacchino was nominated by Joe Cauchi, while Prof. Vella was nominated by Stephanie Abood, Dominic Fenech and Alex Torpiano.

Prof. Baldacchino is a full professor of sociology at the Department of Sociology and board chairman of the Centre for Labour Studies. Prof. Vella is a professor of chemistry at the Faculty of Science and pro-rector for academic affairs.

Both were earlier being considered as the favourites to take up the post of University rector.
