Balletto di Milano to make Maltese debut with a bold new Carmen

Evening organised by AD Events

Acclaimed Italian company brings a contemporary, dance-driven reimagining of Bizet’s classic to the Mediterranean Conference Centre on March 29.

One of Italy’s most prominent contemporary ballet companies is set to make its Maltese debut. Balletto di Milano will take to the stage of the Mediterranean Conference Centre (MCC), Valletta, on March 29 at 7.30pm, presenting its striking reinterpretation of Carmen in an evening organised by AD Events.

Rather than retelling Georges Bizet’s famous opera through voice and spectacle, Balletto di Milano’s Carmen strips the story back to its emotional core. What remains is a physical, high-impact work where desire, jealousy and obsession are expressed entirely through movement.

This is a Carmen built on bodies in motion. Sung arias are replaced by muscular lifts, charged stillness and explosive group sequences. The choreography transforms familiar moments (flirtation, confrontation, seduction and collapse) into a visceral language that speaks directly to contemporary audiences.

A modern figure for modern times

First performed in Paris in 1875, Bizet’s Carmen shocked audiences with its unapologetically independent heroine: a woman who refuses to submit to convention or control. That radical spirit remains central to Balletto di Milano’s interpretation.

Here, Carmen is not a romanticised figure of folklore but a fiercely present, modern woman. Costumes and staging often echo the present day, reinforcing the idea that the opera’s themes (power, freedom and the cost of desire) are as relevant now as they were in the 19th century.

Minimalist sets and carefully sculpted lighting place the focus squarely on the dancers themselves. Shadows, breath and physical proximity do much of the storytelling, allowing small gestures to take on dramatic weight.

From opera to contemporary ballet

Adapting an opera into pure dance is no small task. In Balletto di Milano’s hands, Bizet’s iconic musical themes (including the famous habanera and the toreador motif) become rhythmic anchors for movement. Repeated gestures and distinctive physical patterns function like choreographic leitmotifs, signalling character and emotional shifts without the need for words.

Critics abroad have praised the company for the intensity of its performances and the clarity of its ensemble work. Large crowd scenes move as a single, pulsing organism before splintering into intimate duets and solos, heightening the sense of tension and inevitability that drives the narrative forward.

A demanding performance

Physically, Carmen is an exacting work. Dancers are required to combine classical ballet technique with athletic power and strong acting skills, sustaining dramatic intensity for long stretches without vocal cues. The result is a performance that feels immediate, raw and deeply human.

A welcome addition to Malta’s cultural calendar

Balletto di Milano’s appearance in Valletta offers local audiences a chance to experience how a globally recognised story can be reinvented through contemporary dance. For seasoned dance-goers, it provides a point of comparison with Malta’s own growing dance scene; for newcomers, it is an accessible entry point into narrative ballet beyond the classical canon.

If history is any indication, this Carmen will linger in conversation long after the final curtain - a testament to the enduring power of Bizet’s story and the ability of movement to make it feel new again.
