Ivan Basso attacked seven kilometres from the mountain top finish to win yesterday's 17th stage from Varazze to Limone Piemonte and take his first ever stage victory in the Giro d'Italia.

Italian compatriot Paolo Savoldelli finished seventh, one minute 48 seconds behind Basso, but retained the overall race leader's pink jersey.

Jose Rujano of Venezuela took second place, one minute six seconds behind Basso, followed by Italian Gilberto Simoni who crossed the line in the same time.

Savoldelli holds a 58-second lead over Simoni while Rujano is third, one minute 24 seconds off the pace. Italy's Danilo Di Luca slipped from second to fourth place overall.

Today's 18th stage is a 34-km time-trial from Chieri to Turin where the Giro ends on Sunday.
