Baxter Ltd recently made a financial contribution to the Department of Manufacturing Engineering towards the project "Conceptualisation and Prototyping of a Flexible Mechanism for the Placing of Stopcocks into Pouches" by student Andrea Amato, supervised jointly by Dr Ing. Michael Saliba and Dr Ing. Jonathan C. Borg.
Baxter Ltd, a Maltese subsidiary of the American healthcare multinational Baxter International, Inc., is a fast-paced technology-driven company. It produces, locally, millions of disposable medical devices for infusion, transfusion and dialysis per annum.
During the presentation, Sergio Vella, Baxter's director of manufacturing, stated that his company was pleased with the results of this collaboration as it enabled University students and staff to positively contribute to the firm's engineering challenges.
Dr Borg, head of the Department of Manufacturing Engineering, thanked Mr Vella for the financial contribution and the engineering team at Baxter composed of Kevin Alamango and Edward Saguna for providing the department with a challenging industrial project. He augured that this University-Baxter relationship be strengthened as it provided benefits to all concerned.
Baxter Ltd are strong supporters of the University. Last year they sponsored a workshop at the conference of the European Society of Clinical Pharmacy organised by the Pharmacy Department in Malta. It is hoped that many other industries will follow Baxter's example in running collaborative work with the University.
