Bayern Munich to face Mainz in quarter-finals

Holders Bayern Munich will have a home clash with Bundesliga rivals Mainz in the quarter-finals of the German Cup.

Bayern edged past Hamburg 1-0 with an extra-time goal from Owen Hargreaves on Wednesday.

Third division St Pauli, who ousted top flight Hertha Berlin in a 4-3 extra-time thriller, were handed a tough game against Werder Bremen in the draw, which took place after Wednesday's third round games.

Bayern dominated throughout normal time but with Hamburg keeper Sascha Kirschstein in brilliant form they needed a Hargreaves shot from outside the box in the 113th minute to seal their place.

Werder Bremen made it safely through thanks to a devastating late burst that gave them a 4-1 win away to Hanover '96.

Eintracht Frankfurt beat Nuremberg 4-1 on penalties after the match had finished 1-1, while Kickers Offenbach won another shoot-out against second division rivals Hansa Rostock.

It was left to St Pauli of the northern regional league to provide the only real upset of the round.

They looked to be chasing a lost cause in the first half as goals from Marko Pantelic and Gilberto gave first division Hertha a comfortable lead.

Michel Mazingu-Dinzey pulled one back at the end of the first half, though, and Felix Luz equalised when he poked the ball home after a scramble at a corner four minutes from time.

Hertha went ahead again in extra time with a free-kick from Marce-linho but a long-range strike by Florian Lechner and a Robert Palikuca header took the Hamburg side through.

"We lost because of our own stupidity," Hertha coach Falko Goetz said at the post-match news conference.

"I'm speechless. We knew exactly what could happen but we failed to take care."
