A team from the BBC that will be filming in Malta next month is trying to get in touch with Maltese people who remember Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip's visits to the island in the mid 20th century.

The BBC is producing three hour-long documentaries to mark the Queen's 80th birthday in April 2006. A team will be in Malta to film between November 21 and 27 since both the Queen and her husband will be on the island for the Commonwealth Heads Of Government Meeting.

Prince Philip was posted on HMS Chequers between 1949 and 1951 and the royal couple spent some time together on the island during that time.

Prince Philip arrived in Malta to start his work on board HMS Chequers in October 1949. A month later, the then Princess Elizabeth arrived to celebrate their second wedding anniversary. She was greeting by cheering crowds.

BBC Events assistant producer Gina Campbell told The Times that the BBC would like to get in touch with anyone who remembers those visits or who served with Prince Philip during his time in Malta.

Ms Campbell can be contacted on gina.campbell.01@bbc.co.uk.
