BCRS reports strong collection rate last year
Total collection by weight increased from 10,795.8 tonnes to 10,965 tonnes
BCRS, the Beverage Container Refund Scheme, said on Monday that the collection rate by weight improved from 82.8% to 84.5% last year.
It said the number of beverage containers placed on the market increased from 236.3 million in 2024 to 242.3 million in 2025. At the same time, total collection by weight increased from 10,795.8 tonnes to 10,965 tonnes, while the overall collection rate by weight rose from 82.8% to 84.5%.
"This is an important sign of a stable scheme, supported by continued participation from the public and the business community."
Collection performance across the main material categories also remained strong in 2025.
It said PET containers accounted for 86.7% of the items collected last year, followed by aluminium cans, 86.0%, and glass 82.7%.
Commenting on the results, BCRS Malta Chief Executive Officer Alexander Galea said: “The key message from these results is that the scheme has maintained, and improved, its collection performance while managing a higher number of containers placed on the market. This is a positive outcome and a clear sign that the Beverage Container Refund Scheme is stable, established and continuing to deliver results.”
