George Debono's lengthy exhortation (October 17) for University students to get on their bikes, instead of into their cars, is most inspiring, on the face of it but, in my view at least, about 50 years out of place. Why? Maltese youth's love-affair with the bicycle ended with the 1950s. Today's youth's love-affair is primarily with money, which is the only way to get on to latest fashion mobile phones, clothes, cars and discos. The bicycle has been relegated to an insignificantly few enthusiasts.

This does not mean that public transport to Mater Dei Hospital and to the University Campus should not be improved - why does common sense seem, at times, such a rare commodity with us Maltese?
