In this day and age, this tenet does not hold water.

In the recent referendum the electorate showed maturity and did not fall for any lie - big or small. It is said that one can lie to all the people for some time, and some of the people all the time, but one cannot lie to all the people all the time (with apologies to Abraham Lincoln).
