Birkirkara FC targeted in fake transfer deal scam

Player's agent paid $25,000 to scammer posing as sporting director

Birkirkara FC and a player's agent were targeted by a scammer who posed as a top official of a Bundesliga 2 club.

The player's agent paid the scammer $25,000 but the ruse was discovered when the club began to grow suspicious about the fake official's demands.

Club sources at Birkirkara FC said that in the past two weeks, a foreign individual, who impersonated himself as the sporting director of the German  side, approached the agent of a Birkirkara player and offered him the chance to continue his career with the Bundesliga 2 club.

The agent spoke with Birkirkara FC’s top officials, who set a transfer fee for the Maltese player who was still tied with a contract.

After two days of discussions, the agent agreed to Birkirkara’s conditions, and the club informed him that the player could travel to Germany between Monday and Wednesday to finalise the transfer.
