The bishops said yesterday fireworks' enthusiasts who relished letting off loud petards at all times were failing to show respect to babies, the sick, the elderly and shift workers.

As the summer season beckons, Archbishop Joseph Mercieca, Gozo Bishop Nikol Cauchi and Auxiliary Bishop Annetto Depasquale issued a statement appealing to all to cherish life.

They appealed to enthusiasts to exercise caution and prudence when letting off fireworks and to adhere to the civil authorities' regulations for their own safety and that of others. The bishops said they were shocked and saddened when they heard of cases where persons, who through their actions, endangered the life and health of others at the slightest disagreement.

They also expressed concern at the growing number of traffic accidents and appealed for prudent driving and to resist the temptation to drink and drive.

The bishops also called on those using seacraft to avoid potential tragedies.

Safety on the place of work was also a priority and the bishops appealed to employers to ensure workers were equipped with the necessary protective gear. On the other hand, workers too had to take all precautions to avoid injury.
