Exotic animals and a number of parrots were evacuated early on Sunday afternoon when a pet shop caught fire in San Gwann.

The blaze was reported at about 2.30 and was extinguished by fire-fighters of the civil protection department.

An eyewitness said two parrots appeared to be in bad shape owing to smoke inhalation.
