A number of operations to be performed by consultants visiting purposely from abroad may have to be postponed due to a shortage in blood reserves, nursing officer donation area Angelo Degiorgio said in an appeal for blood.

Mr Degiorgio urged the public to donate blood, saying the Blood Bank was currently experiencing a severe shortage of blood of all types, and in case of emergency, there might not be enough blood in reserve.

He said that consultants were coming from abroad to perform special operations and an extra reserve of blood was required.

If blood was not available the operations would be postponed.

Blood can be donated by all healthy persons aged between 18 and 60 at the Blood Bank, near St Luke's Hospital, between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., seven days a week.
