Bollards added on Għajn Tuffieħa road after new markings spark concern

Transport Malta adds safety measures after drivers were veering to opposite lane

Transport Malta has added bollards to the road near Għajn Tuffieħa after the mayor of Mellieħa called for recently painted road markings to be removed as they were "confusing" drivers.

The road, which was only recently re-opened after maintenance works, had yellow bar stripes painted across the lane heading from Xemxija towards the roundabout leading to Mġarr, Għajn Tuffieħa and Manikata.

The road markings are a speed reduction measure indicating a sharp bend is coming up. However, drivers unfamiliar with the markings, were finding them confusing and were seen crossing over to the opposite lane thinking they were meant to avoid that area.

The newly installed bollards will now ensure drivers remain within the correct lane.

Transport Malta said the markings will be extended to the opposite lane as works on the road continue.

Malta's highway code was updated last week.
