By far the most common medium among amateur painters is watercolour. In many ways it may be described as drawing with wet colours. It is certainly an easier medium to use than oils or acrylics. The last two mentioned are often laid on a canvas with a palette knife, rather like two-dimensional sculpture. Watercolour painting is arguably much easier to practice.
This month's featured book The Complete Watercolour Artist, available from Allied Retail And Commercial Ltd at €8.55 is both a teaching manual and a mini encyclopaedia for the amateur artist. Edited by Sally Harper, the book also contains copious colour illustrations from great watercolourists from Constable to Klée. It also covers the basics very comprehensively, with chapters entitled: Materials: Techniques: Colour and Composition etc... There are also clear, concise sections on style and subject. Stuff like how to go about painting still life, landscapes and those ever-problematic skies. And finally the book carries a very comprehensive index.
This is obviously not a book for the established artist, but it will prove invaluable for the enthusiastic amateur or anyone setting out to paint in watercolours.
