Booklet commemorates Senglea’s Jesus the Redeemer pilgrimage to Qala

Publication not only recalls unique, historic event, but serves as living testimony to a miracle

The miraculous statue of Jesus the Redeemer, venerated at Senglea basilica, visited Qala during a national and jubilee pilgrimage 26 years ago.

To commemorate the event, Mgr Carmelo Refalo, who at the time was Qala archpriest, published a commemorative booklet dedicated to all those who contributed to this pilgrimage which took place on May 29 and 30, 2000.

The publication, which recalls this unique and historic event, not only serves as a memory preserved through the many photographs and recollections of what took place among all those present, but it also stands as a living testimony to a continuing miracle.

Mgr Refalo, who is now Ta’ Pinu rector, said he felt indebted to God and to his Mother, Mary, and turns to the Creator to offer his heartfelt thanks. “Thank you, Jesus the Redeemer,” he said.

Mgr Refalo expressed his gratitude to those who worked with him so that the pilgrimage was not only a success but also bore spiritual fruit. Many worked quietly and without recognition, while others – including the sick – offered prayers so that many people would draw closer to Jesus during this great event.

Mgr Refalo thanked the priests and the people of Qala who, in 2000, were active protagonists on this occasion.

He also expressed his thanks to the then Senglea archpriest Canon Vincenz Cachia, as well as to the Senglea chapter, clergy and people who worked tirelessly to ensure that the pilgrimage took place.

Mgr Refalo also thanked all those who contributed to the publication, expressing gratitude to the current Senglea archpriest Canon Robin Camilleri, who greatly encouraged and supported him in publishing this commemorative book.

Mgr Refalo also thanked Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri, the Directorate for Culture within the Gozo Ministry and Qala mayor Paul Buttigieg and councillors for their financial assistance.
