Foreign Affairs Minister Tonio Borg yesterday held official talks with the new Tunisian national unity government, one of the first European ministers to do so since the popular uprising in the north African country.

Dr Borg held meetings with Prime Minister Mohamed Ghannouchi and Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Radhouane Nouisser, among others.

During the two-day visit to Tunisia, Dr Borg is also meeting with Maltese businessmen who operate in the country.

“The Tunisians look up to Europe, and the EU needs to make sure it helps this country in its transition,” Dr Borg said yesterday.

Tunisia is supporting the 5+5 meeting to be held in Malta in June, during which heads of government will discuss the future of the Mediterranean zone.

The 5+5 is made up of Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Malta, Mauritania, Algiers, Tunisia, Morocco and Libya.

Dr Borg was accompanied by Malta’s Ambassador to Tunis, Vicky Ann Cremona.

The Foreign Minister will tomorrow head to Brussels to take part in a high-level meeting to discuss the developments in Egypt.
