Borg refuses to name fuel hub experts, citing potential ‘witch hunt’
PN introduces sixth district candidates at Luqa event
Opposition leader Alex Borg has refused to name the experts behind the PN’s maritime fuel hub proposal, saying he would not allow them to be targeted in a “witch hunt”.
Borg was speaking in Luqa on Friday during an event to introduce the Nationalist Party’s candidates for the sixth district.
His comments came after Prime Minister Robert Abela said earlier in the day that he would name the “biggest contrabandist in Malta” if Borg revealed the names of the experts behind the Maritime Fuel Hub proposal.
Borg declined to do so.
“I won’t allow a witch hunt on them,” he said, adding that the party would protect its experts.
He said Abela, on the other hand, as prime minister, had an obligation to say whether he had met the person he described as a contrabandist as well as a criminal.
Borg also said he did not expect the police commissioner to take action, despite having challenged the prime minister to file a police report.
Friday’s event also marked George Vital Zammit’s first public appearance since being declared a PN candidate. Vital Zammit is the author of the party’s electoral manifesto this year.
During his address, he said he had “the biggest honour of being the custodian of the party’s proposals”.
However, he said that after being asked by Borg to contest the election, he wanted to take things one step further and “implement this programme as the party in government."
"I want to work with Alex Borg as prime minister," he added.
Vital Zammit also said the PN was “leading the agenda” in terms of proposals.
Jerome Caruana Cilia, the only current PN MP from the district who is running for election, also addressed the event.
He said he had been the MP who “asked the most parliamentary questions”, describing this as part of his work to be a voice for the district.
Caruana Cilia said he had asked more than 2,700 parliamentary questions.
Other candidates introduced during the event included Julian Borg, an architect and Siġġiewi mayor, and Annabelle Cilia, who works in iGaming and previously volunteered with the party for ELCOM.
The party also introduced Fredrick Aquilina, the minority leader in Luqa; George Muscat, a teacher and presenter on Net FM; and Oliver Cini, a marine surveyor.
