Malta champion Alex Borg started 2007 in style after working his way brilliantly through a Welsh Open first qualifying round 5-2 win over Matthew Couch yesterday.

At Prestatyn, Borg looked destined to another unpleasant outcome as he trailed the Welshman after losing the opening two frames.

But, Borg drew level before the break and then won three frames in succession to book his place in the next round and a match (this morning) against Paul Davies, also of Wales. It took Borg two hours and 50 minutes to beat Couch yesterday.

Also in action today will be the other Malta pro in the tournament, Tony Drago. He slipped behind in the rankings lately but was listed high enough to earn a berth in the second qualifying round.

Drago's opponent is Welsh youngster Jamie Jones who is making his pro season debut.
