Newcastle United midfielder Lee Bowyer was charged with violent conduct yesterday after his on-pitch fight with team-mate Kieron Dyer in Saturday's Premier League game against Aston Villa.
Bowyer and Dyer were sent off following the brawl and both faced automatic three-match bans. Bowyer was fined a club record six weeks' wages by Newcastle on Monday.
Newcastle appealed against Dyer's red card but the FA rejected their claim for wrongful dismissal in a separate decision yesterday.
Former England international Bowyer, 28, has until April 20 to respond to his charge, the FA said on its official website.
The case is due to be heard by the FA's Disciplinary Commission on April 22. It has the option of extending Bowyer's ban and fining him.
Dyer will serve a three-match ban with immediate effect although, like Bowyer, he will be free to play in Newcastle's UEFA Cup quarter-final tie with Sporting Lisbon. The first leg is at St James' Park tomorrow.
