Boy, 16, in court after driving stolen motorcycle with stolen number plates

The teenager was granted bail

A 16-year-old boy landed in the dock on Thursday after an off-duty policeman saw him driving a motorcycle.

It later transpired that the motorcycle was stolen and had also been fitted with stolen number plates.

The court on Thursday heard that the boy cooperated fully with the police. He admitted to stealing two motorcycles and a quadbike.

Legal aid lawyer Silvan Pulis requested bail.

The prosecution objected, basing its objection on fear that he would tamper with the evidence.

The defence countered that the boy admitted to the charges and the principle of proportionality should apply in this case given that he is a minor and a first-time offender.

The boy’s ties to Malta were also highlighted and that he would live with his parents if granted bail.

He was granted bail pending sentencing against a €2,000 guarantee provided by his mother.

He was ordered to sign the bail book twice daily.

The court upheld the request for a pre-sentencing report by the defence.

Magistrate Ann Marie Thake presided.

AG lawyer Miryea Mifsud prosecuted assisted by police inspector Jeffrey Scicluna Briffa.

Legal aid lawyer Silvan Pulis assisted the accused.

Lawyer Lennox Vella assisted one of the victims of theft.
