Consignments of Brazil nuts will only be released on presentation of certification issued by the competent Brazilian authorities that the level of aflatoxin in the nuts complies with local regulations, the Department of Public Health said after consulting the Food Safety Commission.
Aflatoxins are carcinogenic substances produced by fungi which contaminate the nuts.
The department said that it was in the interest of food safety to note that nuts, dried fruits and other products listed in the Schedule on LN 392 of 2002, Contaminants in Food Regulations 2002, were to comply with the regulations' requirements.
Random samples will be taken from consignments to ensure compliance. The sampling will be carried out according to regulations.
