The only match from the GFA Division One championship was a direct clash between two of this season's chief title contenders - Nadur Youngsters and Xewkija Tigers.

Nadur Youngsters clinched three precious points from this match to climb to the top of the table, in the process avenging the first round defeat suffered against Xewkija Tigers who have now fallen nine points adrift of the leaders.

Brazilian striker Edoardo Do Nascimento, known as Bizu, was named in Nadur's initial XI. The former Sliema forward turned in a good performance and marked his debut with a goal.

During the first period, Xewkija saw more of the ball but it was Nadur who created the first goalscoring opportunity after only three minutes. Bizu, after a typical solo run, shot just wide from a good position. On 35 minutes, Nadur were again dangerous with an Anthony Portelli shot.

Nadur could not have hoped for a better start to the second half as they broke the deadlock one minute after the restart. A Bonello free-kick was headed goalwards by Muscat, Portelli guiding the ball home from close range. Xewkija's reaction produced a Jason Portelli drive that ended wide.

As the second half gathered momentum, Nadur took command of proceedings and an effort by Bizu ended just wide. On 65 minutes, the Brazilian was again denied by Xewkija goalkeeper Debono who blocked his effort.

In the 71st minute, Xewkija were reduced to 10 men when Josef Xerri was sent off for a second bookable offence. Nadur immediately made the most of their numerical advantage as four minutes later they ensured their win when they were awarded a penalty after substitute Cilia floored Portelli. Bizu duly converted the penalty to seal the Youngsters' 2-0 victory.

Referee: Adrian Azzopardi.

Standings: Nadur Y. 26; Ghajnsielem 25; Xewkija, Zebbug 17; Xaghra 10; Victoria H. 9; Qala 4.
