Freezing weather which brought parts of the UK to a halt has left a number of Maltese people unable to go ahead with their travel plans.

Some 12 flights were cancelled over the past two days, according to Malta International Airport.

The cancellations, caused by snow and icy conditions in the UK, affected Air Malta, Ryanair and EasyJet flights to London (Gatwick), Leeds and Edinburgh.

Leeds, Bradford and Edinburgh airports opened yesterday but Gatwick said it would remain closed until at least six this morning.

Luton and Heathrow have remained open.

Travellers have been advised to keep up to date through the internet rather than flocking to the airports. A number of airlines informed passengers of delays and cancellations via SMS and also provided them with alternative bookings or refunds.

UK media reports yesterday said the “big freeze” would continue to cripple land and air transport throughout the day.

Weather forecasters said the heavy snow and freezing temperatures would persist at least until the weekend.
