The British Council is putting together a programme of alternative contemporary arts to mark Malta's accession to the EU in May.

Forthcoming events include the Welsh theatre group Volcano with their production of This Imaginary Woman - a haunting musical performance about death and life. Appropriately, this will be held at the end of Easter.

The musical is a devastating personal testimony of bitter loss and tender memory. Using haunting live music and set in an ice-white space awash with colour and light, the sexy cabaret flows with honesty, pain and emotion.

There will also be street theatre performances by The Chipolatas, planned for the first week of May to coincide with EU accession celebrations.

Other events are a contemporary arts exhibition in mid-May and an award-winning theatre production, Hurricane, which is a biographical account of snooker legend Hurricane Higgins.
