On the occasion of the official inauguration of Heritage Malta's Gozo office, I came to know that the set of statuettes found some years ago at the Brockdorff Circle in Xaghra will soon be returned to Gozo.
I could not but be happy at this news, remembering that years ago, as chairman of the Cittadella Rehabilitation Committee, I had tried to raise the question of their return to the Archaeological Museum in Gozo.
It was likewise a good and just idea to return to Gozo the Ta' Savina Islamic tombstone. This part of Gozo's patrimony, once transferred on "loan" to the National Museum in Valletta, should have come back long ago.
The tombstone belonged to the Gozo Cathedral Chapter, having been unearthed while the old chapel of Ta' Savina was being demolished in 1901 to make room for the present church of Perpetual Adoration. This 1502 chapel belonged to the Cathedral Chapter.
