Brothers plead guilty to injuring police, resisting arrest in Paceville
Two men given a conditional discharge after apologising for their behaviour
Two brothers from New York who caused a ruckus in Paceville and resisted arrest while intoxicated were handed a conditional discharge on Saturday morning.
Matthew Roberts Miller, 31, and Joshua Daniel Miller, 24, were arraigned following a 3am scuffle with police in St George’s Road, Paceville.
The two reportedly got into trouble when they entered a Paceville clothes shop while heavily intoxicated and caused a commotion. When police arrived at the scene, the two ran away.
Officers eventually caught up with them and a scruffle ensued when they resisted arrest.
The accused and officers involved in the fight all sported bandages when they appeared before Magistrate Abigail Critien on Saturday morning.
The brothers stood accused of injuring two police officers, disobeying their orders and insulting them, disturbing the peace and being drunk in public.
Prosecuting Inspector Nico Zarb told the court he was not seeking a jail term for the two.
Defence lawyers told the court that the two were remorseful and had great respect for the police force. They cooperated with the police during interrogation and entered a guilty plea, the defence noted.
The court handed the two men a conditional discharge for one year and ordered them to pay a €1,200 fine.
Inspectors Nico Zarb and Kelsey Bugeja prosecuted the case. Lawyers Franco Debono and Adreana Zammit represented the accused.
