The Asset Recovery Bureau has been given wide-ranging powers to not only confiscate but also sell the proceeds of criminal activity.

The funds received from the sale of these assets will be used for the “good of the community”, the Justice Ministry said on Monday.

The ministry said that the bureau, which was set up to comply with EU directives, would with immediate effect be able to seize, administer and sell any assets, once there is a court decision in place.

Set up in 2015, the bureau was essentially dormant for the two subsequent years, with many of its governing provisions not in place.

The bureau is headed by Mr Justice Emeritus Joseph David Camilleri.
