The man driving a car that crashed head on into a bus on Thursday morning on Tower Road in Sliema was four times over the alcohol limit.

Sources informed Times of Malta that the breathalyser test showed 91μg  per 100ml of breath, about four times the legal limit.

The legal limit is 22μg per 100ml of breath.

Brazilian national Wallace Oliveira Santos Junior, 36, pleaded guilty to driving recklessly while under the influence of alcohol on Thursday.

Police Inspector Nathan Bugeja said that there were no reported injuries in the crash which blocked both lanes of Tower Road for some time early in the morning.

The accused was driving a Peugeot 106 at 5.30 am when he veered into the opposite lane and crashed head-on with a bus.

Magistrate Donatella Frendo Dimech sentenced the accused to nine months imprisonment, suspended for three years. His license was suspended for two years.

Defence lawyer Alfred Abela represented the accused.
