Injured bus driver not to blame for Mosta crash, Malta Public Transport says
The 49-year-old is now in a stable condition
The bus driver who was critically injured in a head-on collision in Mosta earlier this month was not responsible for the crash, Malta Public Transport said.
He is now in a stable condition.
On June 18, two drivers were involved in a collision between a truck and a bus. The accident was reported on Triq Żejfa and involved three other vehicles.
Upon impact, the bus, which was headed toward Rabat, rolled backwards, hitting three other vehicles, crashing into a traffic barrier, and coming to a stop on the pavement just outside the garden fence of a residence.
The driver of the Isuzu delivery truck, a 49-year-old man, and the bus driver, another 49-year-old man, were both taken to Mater Dei Hospital for serious injuries.
In a statement on Wednesday, Malta Public Transport said CCTV footage on board the bus was reviewed as part of an internal investigation into the crash.
"The footage indicates that our driver was not at fault in the accident, since he was driving in the correct lane at the correct speed before the collision," the statement read.
"Unfortunately, the accident could not have been prevented by our bus driver."
The entity said that for the past few days, its priority has been the bus driver's health.
The 49-year-old driver is currently in stable condition and continues to receive medical care.
The entity also thanked the emergency services and authorities for their immediate response and assistance at the scene of the accident.
Magistrate Monica Borg Galea has opened an inquiry into the accident.
