I have just returned from a very enjoyable 17 day-stay in Malta. The weather was great, the people are friendly and the food was good. Unfortunately, all this was spoilt by some of the buses I had to travel on.
One journey, in particular, was on the night of March 27 from Senglea. The bus was due to leave at 7.30 p.m. for Valletta. There were about eight people standing at the side of the road waiting for the bus driver to make an appearance but by 7.35 he was still nowhere to be seen. At exactly 7.37 he walks out of this bar, situated opposite the bus terminus in Senglea Square, swearing about some football match he had been watching on TV in the bar - the game was between Roma and Inter. Then, to crown it all, once he gets on his bus he proceeds to make a phone call while taking people's bus fares and at the same time shouting down the phone to the other person on the line, all about the football match he had just been watching.
Unfortunately, this was not the only incident I came across. I actually saw one driver sweep his bus (this was at Sliema Front) and then he just threw all the rubbish onto the road... without a care in the world!
I seriously think that some of the bus drivers need a few good lessons in manners and how to speak to people, especially foreigners who ask for information. Some of the drivers are really unable to deal with this.
I will still keep coming to Malta for holidays as I love the island and its people... apart from a few bus drivers!
