Three hooded men armed with a shotgun on Friday evening made off with about Lm31,000 in cash and cheques in a hold-up on one of the directors of Paolo Bonnici Limited in Marsa.

Raymond Bonnici, 41, of Birkirkara, left the company offices at about 6.30 p.m. to deposit the day's takings when he was stopped in his tracks by two men who pointed a shotgun at him and demanded the money.

The incident took place in Cross Road, Marsa, close to an HSBC branch. Mr Bonnici had no choice but to hand over the money to the men, who escaped in a van driven by an accomplice, sources said.

Mr Bonnici was unhurt but had to be treated for shock.

Magistrate Silvio Meli ordered an inquiry and the police are investigating.
