For avid movie buffs like me, owning a DVD player is a must. But am I ready to spend a tenner or much more to buy a single original DVD from a Maltese outlet? Unless it is a two-disc special edition that is jam-packed with extras, I am not. Am I willing to spend Lm4 on a DVD copy of dubious quality with a bad colour photocopy sleeve and a re-sale value of Lm0 from the monti? No.
How do I buy my DVDs then? The internet. Trustworthy websites, such as www.play.com and www.blackstar.co.uk have huge selections of great movies for prices as low as Lm3.85 and www.play.com does not even charge for packaging and shipping. I pick the DVDs up at my local Maltapost branch when they arrive and pay Lm1 VAT on each movie. Therefore, for practically the same price one pays for copy at the monti, I am getting an original. I am building my collection very quickly this way.
Someone from a local company might want to reply to this letter to state that they do sell "Hollywood DVDs" at Lm3.95. That is very true, but these low quality DVDs can be bought from the internet at Lm2.50. I am sure they have their reasons to sell their items at such prices, but I reserve the right to enlighten the people on alternative ways of saving money and helping reduce video piracy.
