Cab driver accused of handling a stolen vehicle

The man was rearrested on Monday

A 49-year-old cab driver was granted bail after pleading not guilty to handling a stolen vehicle.

Abdulbast Mohamed Ali Gerniat, a Libyan-born Marsascala resident, appeared in court on Tuesday morning, where he faced a sole charge.

Police inspector Shawn Pawney explained that the man was arrested on December 7 at about 11:55pm and was subsequently released on police bail.

The man was rearrested on Monday and arraigned under arrest today.

Lawyer Francesca Zarb requested bail, which was granted against a €2,000 deposit and an €8,000 personal guarantee.

He was ordered to sign the bail book twice a week. The police had already arraigned a man arrested on the same day in connection with a stolen vehicle after he arrived at the ferry terminal in Marsa.

Magistrate Noel Bartolo presided.

Police Shawn Pawney prosecuted, while lawyer Francesca Zarb appeared for the accused.
