Three Maltese persons escaped unhurt when their nine-metre cabin cruiser caught fire off Xlendi Bay yesterday morning.

The three, a couple and their daughter, jumped into the sea as the boat was engulfed in flames soon after they noticed smoke coming out of the engine compartment.

They were picked up by a yacht sailing in the vicinity.

A reader of The Times, Carole Hewer, who was in Xlendi, was quick in recording the incident on a digital camera. The photograph shows thick black smoke coming out of the cruiser and a yacht sailing close by.
