Tim Cahill made a perfect return from injury with his first goal in almost a year as Everton secured a 3-1 victory in their UEFA Cup Group A match against Greek side Larissa.

The Australia midfielder opened the scoring with a delightful diving header in the 14th minute. He then set up his side's second goal on 50 minutes as he set up Leon Osman's brilliant clincher from 22 yards.

Cleyton Alexandre Silva pulled one back on 65 minutes for the Greeks but Victor Anichebe ensured Everton rounded off proceedings with a late third.

Tottenham Hotspur were beaten 2-1 by Spanish side Getafe at White Hart Lane.

Ten-man AZ Alkmaar produced a battling performance to earn a 1-1 draw against Zenit St Petersburg in a bad-tempered match at the Petrovsky Stadium.

The Dutch side opened the scoring in the Group A fixture through Ferreira Ari in the 20th minute, but the Brazilian was then sent off 19 minutes later.

Zenit equalised in the 43rd minute with a penalty from Anatoliy Timoschuk but despite dominating the second half were unable to find a winning goal.

Miroslav Klose stole the limelight in Belgrade as the German forward struck a brace in Bayern Munich's 3-2 win over Red Star Belgrade. Fiorentina conceded a late equaliser against Villarreal as they had to settle for a 1-1 draw.

Christian Vieri put the Italians ahead in the third minute of the second half. But the Primera Liga side equalised two minutes from time through a Joan Capdevila goal.
