Call for applications for Energy and Water Agency research scheme

The scheme has a total budget of €400,000, with applications open until September 26

The sixth call of the Energy and Water Agency’s (EWA) Research and Innovation (R&I) Scheme opened Monday, offering funding for projects focusing on decarbonisation, renewable energy, greywater recycling, agricultural irrigation and leakage detection.

The scheme has a total budget of €400,000, with applications open until September 26.

Since its launch in 2020, the scheme has already invested more than €2 million across 15 projects, the Energy Ministry said in a statement announcing the call.

The call was opened at premises belonging to battery technologies company Abertax, which has been an active partner in past calls through projects carried out in collaboration with the University of Malta, the ministry said.

The company showcased projects funded through previous calls at the launch event, including ReUse, which developed a process for testing and repurposing discarded EV batteries, and PvPro, a renewable-based water heating and energy management system.

Energy Minister Miriam Dalli said the scheme had “enabled researchers and innovators to turn ideas into real-world solutions, from improving tap water quality to developing offshore renewable energy and finding second-life uses for electric vehicle batteries”.

Parliamentary Secretary Keith Azzopardi Tanti said it “continues to show how innovation... can generate solutions that benefit our society and economy”.

EWA CEO Manuel Sapiano said interest in the scheme increased each year, which he said “reflects the determination of Malta’s research community. It’s encouraging to see people from different sectors teaming up and tackling challenges together”.

Full details of the call, including the rules for participation, are available on the EWA website. Prospective applicants may also contact the agency directly at rni-energywateragency@gov.mt.
