Nature Trust (Malta) has called for a clean-up of the Anchor Bay environs.

It said the area just in front of picturesque Popeye Village was in a degraded state. The coastal garigue was stifled by tons of building rubble dumped unscrupulously there over the years.

"Such an eyesore is clearly visible to all tourists and locals who wander a short distance away from the precincts of Popeye Village."

It said the water in the area just outside Anchor Bay was literally crude untreated sewage due to a nearby outfall.

The society said it was calling on the ministry of infrastructure and resources to emulate its highly commendable efforts along the Xghajra-Kalkara coastline and embark on a massive clean-up, rehabilitation and clean-up operation of this area.

It augured that the planned sewage treatment plants would eradicate the discharging of untreated sewage into the sea once and for all.
