Call to reconsider June 1 SEC exams over post-election disruption fears
Momentum warns traffic and post-election celebrations could delay students
Momentum has called on authorities to reconsider the decision to hold SEC exams on June 1, warning that post-election disruption could prevent students from reaching exam venues on time.
The MATSEC Examinations Board had earlier announced that exams scheduled for May 30 would be postponed to June 1 and 2 following the election date. All exams scheduled for Friday May 29 will proceed as originally planned but venues were changed.
Parents have reached out to Momentum expressing “serious concern and disbelief” at the decision, with the party insisting this puts “unacceptable” pressure on students who risk facing delays in reaching exam venues due to traffic disruptions expected that day as post-election celebrations traditionally hit the streets.
“Students sitting for MATSEC and SEC exams are already under significant pressure. For many, these exams pay a decisive role in shaping their academic and professional futures. It is therefore unacceptable that they may now also be forced to contend with traffic gridlock, road closures, and official motorcades which could delay or even prevent them from arriving at their examination centres on time,” Momentum said.
The party called on MATSEC and the Education Ministry to reconsider the decision to reschedule the exams to June 1 “and act in the best interests of students”.
“The current plan risks placing students at a clear disadvantage through no fault of their own, undermining the principles of fairness and equal opportunity,” Momentum said.
It insisted no SEC exams should be held on June 1.
“Students deserve certainty, fairness, and a level playing field, not added stress and logistical obstacles beyond their control. Momentum stands with students, parents, and educators in calling for immediate action to rectify this situation.”
New venues
Candidates originally scheduled to sit their exams on Friday May 29 at St Theresa College, Vincenzo Borg Brared Middle School in Birkirkara, will now have their exams at St Ignatius College Mikiel Anton Vassalli Secondary School, Tal-Ħandaq, Qormi.
Candidates who were do to sit their exams on May 29 at Maria Regina College, Żokrija Secondary School (Block Delta/Epsilon) will remain at the same school but will be shifted to Block Kappa/Sigma.
