Campaign demands stop to Padel courts work on Manoel Island

The courts are not covered by a permit, campaign says

The Manoel Island: Post Għalina campaign has called for works on new Padel courts on Manoel Island to be stopped, saying they are not covered by a permit.

The courts are being built by Gżira United Football Club on the site of its football ground.

"Such activities, which effectively constitute illegal development on a site recently heralded as a new national park and integrated into Malta Vision 2050, must immediately be brought to a halt," the campaign group, formed of several NGOs, said.

It said sports and fitness should be an integral part of Manoel Island’s future as a national park. But developing a complex of padel courts without a permit ran counter to the spirit of genuine collaboration that has thus far characterised the national effort to turn Manoel Island into a national park.

The campaign said it has filed an official complaint with the Planning Authority’s Compliance & Enforcement Directorate, and will be following up to ensure that the law is observed.
