A derailed train hauling crude oil and liquefied petroleum gas caught fire in Western Canada.

Three tankers containing LPG erupted in flames when the train came off the tracks near the small Alberta settlement of Gainford.

The crude oil did not ignite.

No-one was hurt but residents were evacuated as the fire was allowed to burn itself out.

The train's operator Canadian National Railway said it was too early to say what caused the derailment.

But safety fears have been heightened over Canada's boom in crude oil transport by rail as pipelines fill to capacity, especially since the deadly Lac-Megantic crash in July.
