Education Minister Louis Galea yesterday urged parents to vote in the school council elections being held today, which will see a record number of candidates.

Fifty-eight schools - 48 primaries, nine secondaries and a special school - are holding polls to elect parents, while elections for teacher representatives are being held in 23 schools - 17 primaries, four secondaries and two special schools.

A total of 487 parents and 400 teachers are contesting, both record figures since school council elections started being held.

The councils will be made up of three parents and three teachers, the head of school and a representative of the minister.
