Gozitan poet Canon Joe Mejlak recently celebrated his 60th birthday with a get-together at Villa Fiorita, Xaghra.

The celebrations started with Mass said by Canon Mejlak himself. During the reception he presented his new book of poems, Rwiefen, reading some of his works, and thanking everyone who helped him in the publication of this new book.

Canon Mejlak is related to poetess Mary Mejlak, who would have turned 100 on August 9. January 1 was the 30th anniversary of her death.

Canon Mejlak told The Sunday Times that he titled this book Rwiefen because in it he expresses what he feels on the ups and downs life has mercilessly thrown at him.

Rwiefen includes some poems that had never been published before. Mejlak feels nostalgia about his distant past. He remembers, among other events, the first love he felt, which gave him little pleasure and much regret.

Mejlak also shows a patriotic side and, even more so, a religious aspect, mostly when he opens his heart with the Lord, in whom he has great faith. His poetic style is reminiscent of Fifties literature.
