Over 45 cyclists showed up recently for a sprint in Constitution Street, organised by the Mosta Local Council in conjunction with Mosta Cycling Club and Malta Cycling Federation, to mark the national car-free day.
First to start were the U-15s and ladies in a combined race. Talented rider Adrian Sciberras (Mosta CC) won the youngsters' category, followed by Shawn Pullicino (Pamsons CC). Danica Spiteri (Pamsons CC) was the only competitor in the ladies event.
There were three juniors competing in their class during which Roderick Muscat (Pamsons CC) showed some spirited cycling to outsprint Mosta CC duo Steve Sciberras and Darren Colombo.
The veterans' race was a very fast one indeed with Emmanuel Bezzina (Mosta CC) powering his way to first spot followed by team-mates Emmanuel Camilleri and Paul Bonello.
However, the closest race of all was the Open which saw the top three in the race being the same podium winners of a similar sprint in August.
Patrick Scicluna (Mosta CC) set an early pace before Johan Delicata, also of Mosta, made a breakaway attempt only to be caught at the last few metres.
A classic sprint between Delicata, Albert Cilia (Birkirkara SJ) and Pierre Borg (Birkirkara SJ) ensued as they pedalled strongly down the finish in one line.
Borg eventually came from behind to win by a narrow margin with Cilia and Delicata claiming second and third places respectively.
Present for the occasion were Mosta mayor Joe Demartino and federation president Joe Lanfranco.
