Car importation

In my letter of June 16, I asked various questions regarding the possibility of cheaper car ownership once Malta is now in the EU.

That very same day, I received a phone call from Anthony Gouder, from the Customs Duty Free Car Section. Very courteously and comprehensively, he explained the present situation as regards car importation through Customs.

Another phone call to Sylvana Bartolo at the Car Licensing Department was again met with all the answers, concisely and efficiently.

Thank you both. Your behaviour is in stark contrast to that of MIC, and another person at the Licensing department, both of whom failed to acknowledge, let alone answer, my e-mails on the subject.

However, I am not the only person asking questions and needing answers. There are some general misconceptions on the subject and some people's expectations do not conform to the actual situation.

May I therefore suggest to the heads of departments mentioned above to make public all rules and regulations regarding the subject, for everybody's benefit. This would also ensure that nobody is privy to special knowledge and help eliminate abuse.
