Qormi and Sliema Wanderers played a lively goalless draw at the Hibs Stadium.

It was a harsh result for relegation-threatened Qormi who were clearly the better result but they were let down with some poor finishing.

In fact it was Qormi who started the better and thought they took the lead on 13 minutes when from a Ryan Micallef free-kick Alfred Effiong headed the ball past Sliema goalkeeper Glenn Zammit but referee Fyodor Zammit annulled the goal as he felt the Malta striker had committed a foul.

At the other end, Michael Mifsud sped clear but was denied by the onrushing Matthew Farrugia with the ball falling to John Mintoff who saw his shot blocked by the alert Zoran Levnaic.
On 16 minutes Effiong’s backheader played Micallef in but the former Rabat forward saw his shot blocked by Zammit.

Qormi continued to control proceedings and on the half hour mark they were unlucky not to take the lead when Jonathan Bondin let fly a fierce drive that came off the bar.

The Blues had the last chance of the half when Djumo Bocar connected to Potezica’s throughball but his attempted lob finished over.

Qormi maintained the initiative on 55 minutes when Effiong released Villabos who with only Zammit to beat saw his low shot deflected to a corner by the Sliema goalkeeper.

Six minutes later, the Sliema custodian did well to palm away Effiong’s firm drive while three minutes later Zammit again distinguished himself to palm away Micallef’s low shot.

The woodwork again denied Qormi in time added on when Leighton Grech sped clear but was unlucky to see his low drive hit the upright with Zammit beaten.

Glenn Zammit was voted as the BOV Player of the match.
