Armed robbers carried out a daring 'carjacking' and stole what police said was a considerable sum of money in Qawra yesterday afternoon.
The police said they received a report that a hold-up had just taken place in Qawra Road at about 3.45 p.m.
They said it appeared that four armed men in a van stopped a Euroexchange courier who was driving along the road and took a "substantial" amount of cash. The sum was not given.
Sources said most of the money appeared to have been in foreign currency.
They said the courier was driving towards the Suncrest Hotel when the robbers overtook his car in an old Toyota Liteace and stopped suddenly in front of him, blocking the road.
The robbers, wearing hoods, then stormed out of the van and smashed the passenger side window of the courier's car.
The van was found by the police shortly afterwards in the vicinity.
The police said the duty magistrate was informed of the "alleged crime" and experts are helping with the inquiry. CID and district police are investigating.
